6 Things To Do When You Hit a Low Point In Life

I have never come across anyone who has never hit a low point in their life. All of us one way or the other has been there! No two individual experiences are alike. There are variations to the way that you feel.

For some, it’s a place where you become disengaged and there can be emotions of anger, sadness, and frustration or you just feel tired and burnt out.

For others, it is a moment when life smacks you hard in the face. You want to fight back but you can’t because it’s almost as if your strength is gone.

Life will not always go the way that you want it but what I can assure you of is that you should never give in to defeat.

Take a step or two back if you have to. Give yourself time to be sad, frustrated and angry. Give yourself time to heal. Deal with whatever it is. Face it, but don’t give up!

The late Maya Angelou said, “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. Because it may be necessary to encounter defeats, so you can know where you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.”

So here is what else you need to keep in mind. Have faith to believe that you will come out of your low place. Believe in yourself that you will rise again above this! Tell yourself that this too shall pass!

According to Eleanor Roosevelt, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of her (his) dreams.”

Therefore, I would say to you, start believing in your unlimited potential!

REASONS WHY WE END UP IN LOW PLACES IN LIFE

Most of us are driven by success and we constantly tell ourselves that where we are is not where we should be. It is also true that it is never easy to accept that what we have spent months or years building up would just disappear in the twinkling of an eye.

What’s our response to that? It’s worry! Some even begin to cast doubt. There is the fear of failure.

Your confidence is shattered by the dreadful feelings of being alone, rejected and perhaps the feeling of being unloved.

Here are some practical reasons why we end up in low places:-

  • It is often an indication that one season in your life has changed and you are about to enter into another.
  • An old season brings death to many things in your life – business or personal connections, plans, ideas, hopes and at times some of your dreams.
  • God is trying to get your undivided attention. Yes, He is.
  • Sin and wrong doings bring about spiritual death and pushes us into a low place
  • It is an indication to slow down your pace – many of us can get too busy at times
  • It is a time for spiritual and even physical cleansing
  • It is a time of preparation for what is about to come and so you must begin to shed some old things to make room for the new.

WHAT SHOULD YOUR RESPONSE BE?

1) Get into a quiet place

It is a good time to get into a quiet place of rest. Get away from all the noise, hustle and the bustle so that you can hear the voice of your heart that is often drowned out by the noise of the crowd. Use the time to breathe, to heal, to accept life and to grow.

Realize that it’s in the valley you glow and new growth begins.

2) Do not put up resistance to the place where you are

Resistance to change makes life more difficult and harder to accept. Putting up an internal or even external fight to change, bring about more pain and suffering.

Give yourself permission to be where you are so that you can listen for that glimmer of hope and see the light at the end of the tunnel.

3) Take responsibility for what you are going through

You’ve got to take ownership of your own life. Don’t blame others for what you are faced with or you are going through. By doing that you are giving up your power to them and are denying yourself the opportunity for change and new growth to come about.

In order to change situations, you have got to take responsibility. Face it. It is how you get through it.

4) It’s a good time to conduct a self-assessment

Note I did not say an assessment on your business or even business strategy. This is about looking on the inside of you at places that no one else can see but you know that exist.

You alone know about those blind spots. The places within that are still bleeding and needs time to heal – the disappointment, the friend who betrayed your trust and even the one who you need to forgive.

5) Get rid of all the dead weight

Dead weight is not just about old hurts, hurtful situations in your past or things that you just have no control over. This has to do also with getting rid of negative people and those who simply have no connection whatsoever to your purpose in life.

And so in order to move forward, you have got to cut ties with them. Some persons come into our lives for a reason, a season or a lifetime. Know those who have come into your life for a lifetime as opposed to those for a season who sadly you have to part ways with them.

6) Don’t count yourself out

There is greatness inside of you. With all that you have done or even accomplished in life, you have not yet tapped into your full potential.

No matter what, keep a positive attitude which can either improve your situation or degrade it. Your struggles and your low place are the pathway to your new life and your future ahead.

Never accept failure as an option. It’s NOT! Be kind to yourself and find the lesson while in your low place. That is the key to you rising to become the extraordinary person you were meant to be!

  1. I am 43 years old. never been married. in a dead end job. in love with a married man. have so much potential that’s going to waste. I don’t know how to tap into it. I am over my head in debt. I am of 3 children. My siblings and parents have been leaning on me for years – spiritually as well as financially. I’m really tired of being knocked around by life. Just want to be happy – without worrying about something. I’ve never been this low in my entire life.

    • Hi Audrey,
Welcome to my blog and applaud you for your courage and grace of humility to share such personal story. I recognize by what you shared that you really need help to get you out of that low place.

The post has offered some very practical solutions that once applied to your everyday life will bring change in your life and great benefits. The first thing to getting solutions is to recognize that there is a problem and that for many is a big hurdle which you have just leaped over. Life will give you what you settle for but when you tell yourself you are not settling anymore and that you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that there is far better in life for you, then you are already halfway there.

There was a time my life was in a downward spiral and nothing (children, relationships, job, money) that I tried was bringing me happiness and peace of mind. Matter of fact it grew worse daily until I surrendered my life, problems and all to Jesus that things began to turn around. I recognized sometime after that I was trying to fix my life and do thing in my own strength. I owned the fact that God was the one with the blueprint for my life and He has the strategy and the plans of what would give me everything that I need to give me happiness, abundant life and more than what I could have ever asked or think. It was then that I understood what Matthew 6:33 really meant.

You can begin by getting into that quiet place and take it from there but do not give up and do not quit. You have great potential and purpose! YOu are talented! Don’t let those things go to waste. Hope this helps. God bless you!

  2. Am at the lowest point of my life due to a supposed wrong decision I took in my career… Everything at the moment is so dark around me. My wife will put to bed anytime soon but I feel so low I cry every morning as a result of this decision. I feel I need help.

    • Hi Tolulope,

Welcome to my blog and sharing your story with us. It is sad what is taking place with you at the moment but one thing you must realize is that is in the past and the decision you made cannot be undone.

It is the constant beating up on yourself, and holding on to something that you cannot change a this time is what is causing you to feel as if darkness is all around you, hence the crying. So let go of what is past, forgive yourself for making that decision, stop beating up on yourself about it and surrender everything through prayer to the Lord.

We all make mistakes in life but what we must draw from those experiences are the lessons. Take the lessons and learn from them. The 6 step approach in this post works and I encourage you to try them.

      God bless you. 🙂

  3. Hi Yvonne, 🙂

I’ve been feeling down the past couple of days because I’m about to enter a new phase in my life and I’m very worried about the future. I tell myself to stay grounded in the present and feel gratitude for all that I have, but sometimes I feel myself sliding back into my negative thinking. Taking time away to think has helped me realized that I’m a lot stronger than I realized and that I just need to keep holding on to faith; everything will be all right if I believe it. It gets pretty hard but I find talking to loved ones who care about my mental and emotional well-being really helps because they are able to see things about me that I can’t see so easily. This support is so essential. Thanks again for an inspiring and uplifting post!

    • Hi Sammy

So good to see you. 🙂

The interesting thing about this post, I wrote it on a day that I just felt so miserable. I did not feel good about myself and I believe at that time, I had a bout of low self-esteem and confidence. What I found though was that as I channeled my energy into the writing, I began to feel better and I was able to see the rainbow across the dark sky that hung over me. Within hours, I felt renewed and like a butterfly, made my way out of the cocoon.

I said all that to say to you, this too shall pass. See your rainbow through all of this. The deeper/darker your valley moment, the higher/brighter will be your mountain top. Keep holding on to faith – it is what will give birth to your hopes and your dreams and materialization of the plans you had never imagined. Your pain has a purpose, don’t resist it but give birth to your hopes and dreams.

Weeping and sadness will endure only for a night but your joy and laughter is about to come! Don’t give up, you have come to far to turn back now!

      Cheers! 🙂

  4. Hello Yvonne,
It is nice being here for the first time reading such an inspirational post.
In life, we all hit that low point in life in one way or another. Some do get up, find the problem and solved it, while some remain at the bottom because they have no idea of what to do.

Your post have showed many how to get back up from their falls…
Thanks for such a wonderful post and do have a wonderful week ahead

    • Hi Babanature

Welcome to my blog! I am delighted to have you, no doubt leaving your busy schedule to do so and to leave a comment. I am glad you found this post inspirational.

Life do have a way of taking some unexpected turns and when it does, we get knocked down or knocked aside and not very often do we know the direction in which to turn. Of course some can find the solution quicker than others but some just need that extra push to get them back on track.

We are here to help each other and I am just happy to know that while I am pushing to get myself back up through my writing that it’s also helping another to rise and soar again.

Cheers to you. Please come again and thanks for your support. 🙂

  5. Hello Madam Yvonne,
This is my first time on your blog and this post to me has come in very handy. There are times I feel more or less like I am not good enough but finding myself in a cool and quiet place lifts me up at the end.
Thanks for this piece and do have a great day.

    • Hi Emmanuel

A warm welcome to blog. Grateful that you took the time off of your busy schedule to stop by and to share your thoughts.

I can definitely identify with those feelings where I feel like I am not good enough, and perhaps I am not making sense and few people even want to hear what I have to say. Actually, it is from that very place that this post was born and written, with the hope that while I am helping myself back up from that low place, perhaps someone else who is there can be helped out of it at the same time. I find it extremely helpful when as you said, I retreat into a cool and quiet place,

Thanks and I do welcome you to come again and hope that my written thoughts will inspire you again. Cheers and continue to have a great week. 🙂

  6. Janelle Moore // August 19, 2014 at 8:44 am //

    Hi Yvonne
This post was spot on! It was indeed uplifting. I have found myself in a low place so many times. It is never a nice feeling. One of the things that I have done thought is to turn to trusted friends for support and even their shoulder to cry on if necessary.

I consider low places or valley experience as the launch pad to bounce back higher than you were before in life. Like a ball, the harder it hits the ground the higher it bounces into the air and the deeper your valley, the higher your mountain top on which you will rise!

    Thanks for sharing! Blessings! 🙂

    • Thank you Janelle for you contribution to the discussion. Very good analogy that we can think of the ball when it hits the ground and the height at which it bounces back. The aim is not to focus so much on where we are but where we are going when we rise.

      Blessings! 🙂

  7. Hi Yvonne,

That was surely an inspirational post 🙂

Yes, you are right…who doesn’t go through the low phases of life. I haven’t come across a single person so far! And those who portray to be happy, are perhaps hiding it within them or have learnt to overcome such patches in their life, but we all have them for sure.

Things can get overwhelming and at times tough to manage as well, but just as you mentioned, you need to learn and cope with them. My Mom used to always say that only His loved ones are put to test, so don’t worry and give it your best shot. That’s just what I do 🙂

Thanks for sharing this wonderful post with us. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

    • Hi Harleena,

Excellent point you made here that those who portray to be happy, are hiding it within themselves. Actually that does more harm than good to the person who bottles up things on the inside both in the short term and in the long run.

It is best to release and not keep it inside. There are so many mental health issues that people are faced with and sadly, keeping things inside is leading on to the path of depression. It is also true that if everything is going fine and ‘dandy’ and there are no tests and trials then it’s time to check oneself because there is a good chance that person is on the wrong path in life.

Cheers! Be blessed and continue to have a great week! 🙂
