Bill Gates Quotes – His View About What Successful People Do

Bill Gates (photo credit Wikipedia)

I recently wrote an article entitled, “9 Powerful But Simple Ways To Be A Success Without Spending A Dime” and since then, I must admit that more thoughts about success have evaded my mind.

The way that I have been thinking about success is the kind of legacy that I want to live out here on earth and then in later years, to leave that legacy behind for others to follow.

Now there are many who focus on someone’s legacy but only after the individual have died. However my dream is to establish an impressive mark here on earth that this generation and those to come will know that I was here, that I made a difference and that my life had a positive impact on that of others.

Now that’s what I would certainly consider a mark of success! 🙂

Wouldn’t you love that for yourself too? I am certain that you would. 🙂

Finding The Role Model of True Success

I looked around for role models and people who I believe fit into the mold of true success. Once I had narrowed down the list, I finally agreed to choose Bill Gates.

So to build upon what I had written before on success, I would be bringing you specific quotes from him.

I would then elaborate on the quotes in terms of what I believe they mean, how each one can impact our performance when we apply his wisdom to our lives,  what is he hinting to us about our journey and self and what we may need to change in order to become more successful.

Key Things to Know About The Man Himself

Bill Gates Quotes – What Successful People Do

1. ) “We all need people who will give us feedback. That’s how we improve.” ~ Bill Gates

Feedback helps you to know whether you are on the right path or not and if you are doing and saying the right things.

The person who is giving you the feedback is better at helping you to distinguish your unique voice and to lend the support you will need to cultivate it.

Feedback is also an opportunity to take corrective measures immediately upon discovering that something is not going right. ~ EMB

2. ) “I believe that if you show people the problems and you show them the solutions they will be moved to act.” ~ Bill Gates

It is not good enough to just say that there is a problem and not know how to solve the problems.

When you have the right strategy then the responsibility is yours to teach others. Don’t just keep it to yourself.

Take them through the process and once they have learned it, they are better equipped with the knowledge to take action, even in your absence. ~ EMB

3. ) “Everyone needs a coach.  It doesn’t matter whether you’re a basketball player,  a tennis player, a gymnast or a bridge player.” ~ Bill Gates

In order to have a successful professional career, it is important for you to have a coach. I see the coach also as a mentor. This is the person who will help you to grow, help you to build and develop your skills and to cheer you along every step of the way.

Having recognized your gifts and talents, s/he being in an advantageous position, is there to challenge you and help you to maximize your full potential.

This is the person who goes out of their way to connect you to the other successful people and who is already leading in the industry. ~ EMB

4. ) “We’ve got to put a lot of money into changing behavior.” ~ Bill Gates

This I believe speaks to investing money into getting the best education and training there is – not just for yourself as the leader or the manager, but for your employees as well.

Most behaviors are learned and in order to unlearn them, it requires a coach, a teacher or a trainer to bring about a shift in a person’s mindset. A one off money investment will not bring you the results that you desire and therefore have to be an ongoing process. EMBBill-Gates-Success-is-a-lousy-teacher1-760x427

5. ) “The most amazing philanthropists are people who are actually making a significant sacrifice.” ~ Bill Gates

True and lasting success comes with great sacrifice. You must be willing and able to work hard and to persevere through the hardships you are sure to meet along the way.

You must also realize the road to success is an uphill battle and sometimes the results you are looking for seems nowhere in sight. But remember the best diamonds are the ones that withstood the heat of the hottest fire. ~ EMB

6. ) “I have been struck again and again by how important measurement is to improving human condition.” ~ Bill Gates

When goals are developed and established, it is very important to set standards by which you will measure your progress against over specific time periods. It is the only way you will know how you are doing.

It’s important to set targets – be it by a certain date you will have certain things done or you measure by percentage or whatever method you choose to measure by, it remains part of the process. Stick with it. ~ EMB

7. ) Don’t compare yourself with anyone in the world. If you do so, you are insulting yourself.” ~ Bill Gates

Do not try to be anyone else, be yourself. Compete with yourself and win! Comparing yourself to others can lead to unhappiness and ungratefulness. It is also one of the things that block your ability to focus inward on the positive things and what is really important.

YOU MUST READ: Don’t Try To Be Perfect – Be Yourself!

Trying to draw comparison with others will make you bitter and that bitterness becomes a cell that imprisons your life. So no matter what, make your life work with the resources that you have available to you.

#7 happens to be a favorite quote for me as well. I do my best to live by that rule of thumb on a daily basis. To each his own – we are a masterpiece by creation, creative, innovative, uniquely gifted and talented!

Have a great day/rest of the week. Hope you pay a visit again soon. 🙂

  4. Hey Yvonne,

It’s my first time here and I am glad reading the quotes made by one man we all know is a great inspiration to the word.

As a blogger, I normally like to step out of my comfort zone to see what is happening out there. This include reading books and quotes by great men of our time and how best I can put some of them at work for a better blogging experience.

Bill Gates is really a man worth mentioning till time end because he has greatly impacted positively in millions of lives round the globe.

This is another awesome way of connecting and engaging with people Yvonne! I really enjoyed the reading.

Do have a wonderful weekend Yvonne.

    Jackson

    • Hi Jackson,

A warm welcome to my blog! 🙂 Your feedback is appreciated.

Quotes and sayings of others are definitely a great source of inspiration and for sure Bill Gates is one of them. As bloggers, I believe reading must be among one of the top things that we do. By so doing we are empowered even more to write impressive posts that have impact on the readers that have them returning for more.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by and to participate, thus adding value. Have a great weekend.

  5. I’ll chime in on Feedback (#1) as one of my favorites, but those are some good quotes and added thoughts you provided.
When I first started taking writing seriously, I got a bunch of books about writing novels, crafting plots, creating descriptions, inventing unique and meaningful characters, and so on. I tried my hand at it for a while, and pounced on friends who were willing to provide informal feedback.
But a couple years ago, I joined an actual critique group, where the whole purpose of each monthly meeting was to tear apart each others’ works for the purpose of rewriting them stronger than ever before–and learning to not make the same mistakes next time.
Nothing inspired me, motivated me, or taught me as much as that experience. We’re terribly good at tricking ourselves into thinking we’re awesome. And we don’t always get honest harsh feedback we need from friends afraid to hurt us.
The first few episodes of any season of American Idol prove that point quite well.

    • Thanks for your feedback and for your honesty. The thing about feedback is to give it in love, even if the truth hurts. Everyone want to hear that they have written a great article or book etc but not everyone is willing to accept that what they thought was great is not really so after all.

Group feedback makes the review process even more authentic and credible as it tend to be strongly objective as opposed to being highly subjective. Definitely some valid points you’ve made. Thanks for sharing your views. 🙂

  6. Hi Yvonne, awesome quotes and the way you have explained them is awesome.
Bil Gates is awesome himself. Rarely do we see a man achieve such great feat and even rarer of the first of its kind is when a man donates so much for charity.

This is the true meaning of being rich, isn’t it?

    • Hi Iswadhin

Happy to see you again. I am glax that you enjoyed this selection of quotes and the explanation given.

No doubt Bill Gates motivates and inspires many persons. His charitable giving and his generousity in many other ways makes him stand out from the crowd and become noticeable in a positive way. The impact on others is even more extraordinary.

  7. Hey Yvonne,
It was really an inspiring posts. And the man himself – Bill Gates is the source of inspiration to us in many ways. I’m his big fan and yes he has a very different kinds of techniques to do the work and that is why he is so successful and rich 😀
He is no doubt, one of the top Philanthropists of the world and he is a very humble person which I liked the most and I’ve personally learned a lot of things from him.
Thank you dear for sharing this post and I;m sure your audience will love it 🙂

    • Hi Vishnu,

Great to have you here and to leave such value added comment. Bill Gates is all of those things and more. It is true we don’t know him on a personal level, but his spirit of generosity, humility, and always willing it seems to help others have made him stand out from the crowd. It is hard not to take notice.

      Have a blessed day/weekend. 🙂

  8. Hi Yvonne

A wonderful post. Bill Gates has been one man that I admire. He has a lot of insights and I do enjoy his quotes. I am particularly like the area where he talks about comparing oneself. It is crazy and not productive to compare yourself with others; why should you do such? It is better to take advantage of your uniqueness and be the best you can be.

    • Hi Awazie, great point there where you mentioned it is crazy and not productive to compare yourself to others. Could you imagine how much time is wasted when someone engage in that sort of behavior? I agree that is a no, no! We all have unique qualities, gifts and talents and time should be spent on developing and fine tuning them in a way that makes us stand out.

Thanks for stopping by. I value your contribution. Have a great weekend. 🙂

  9. Wow.. these are great and inspiring quotes. They help to check oneself. Thanks for sharing Woman of God.

    Hello Madam Yvonne,

That was highly inspirational, it is indeed very motivational. I believe every one has heard about Bill Gates including myself, but i never had the opportunity of benefiting from his quotes. Thanks for making such references.

As i went through this article i felt differently, i began to see myself differently. I enjoyed the point # 7 where you said something about not comparing yourself to others. I think every one is distincted with his or her different characters, we were created with our own special qualities. Why then should we try to compare ourselves to others? Comparing ourselves to others could be an informal way of insulting ourselves. I agree with you on that.

However, i will endeavour to act on these points revealed here. I believe it will be very beneficial in the long run. Thanks for taking your time to set up such an awesome article. Do have a splendid moment.

    • Hi Ferdiklint

A warm welcome to my blog. I am delighted to have you here and glad you took the time not only to visit but to leave a comment.

I am so glad that the quotes had such a positive impact on you and that you are now thinking and seeing yourself differently. All of us at one point or another need that kind of motivation. We are all distinct and special in our own way, gifted and talented in ways that could not have been imagined. Point #7 is also one that I remind myself of ever so often, which is never compare myself to others.

Not only that, someone once told me, “other people see in you what you don’t yet see in yourself.” I thought that was so profound! My life has never been the same.

I want you to know that greatness lies in you, go after it, live and let the world experience it! Have a great day! 🙂

  11. Hi Yvonne,

Wonderful post indeed, and you know how much I love quotes, so this one seems the perfect one for me too 🙂

Bill Gates is indeed one the most successful people and his work is proof enough for that – right from the time he started and all that he has achieved, it’s been a journey of success. Not that he hadn’t come across hurdles, which everyone does, but the strength lies in crossing those hurdles and coming through victories and that’s just what he did. Of course, now he is such a giver, a philanthropist, which again very few people are, so that goes to show what a great human he is too.

Thanks for sharing more about him with us. Have a nice weekend 🙂

    • Hi Harleena

I could not agree with you more on those points about Bill Gates. He seem to have an amazing personality, with such a great spirit. No wonder so many admire his strength of character, his honest business practices and his work ethics. He is definitely a high achiever and an inspiration to many.

Thanks for gracing us with your presence and for your comment. Have a great weekend. 🙂
