5 Most Dangerous Cultures Suffocating The Church Today

There are six things that the word of God says that He hates, and the seventh one is said to be an abomination. In the book of Proverbs 6:16-19 it is recorded the Lord hates

• A proud look
• A lying tongue
• Hands that shed innocent blood
• A heart that devise wicked imaginations
• Feet that are swift in running to mischief
• A false witness that speak lies and
• He that sow discord among the brethren

When I look at church and why I believe it is not as effective and relevant today as it was many years ago, I could not help but notice the similarities in the foregoing and the root causes of a dangerous culture that has made it’s way into the church to the point where it is suffocating it.

There is a desperate need for a revival but until we can identify what’s wrong, we would not be able to come up with the strategies that are so vital to make it right once again.

The list I am about to share is not exhaustive but these are among the top most dangerous church cultures:

1. Pride

Pride is a killer! It is a culture of having a proud look and where the individual somehow believe that everything revolves around him/her. The one that is prideful lacks a teachable spirit and have difficulty embracing and adapting to change. They are manipulative and controlling and resist any ideas that challenge their norm or the way they have done things in the past.

2. Selfishness

Too many are about me, myself and I. At face value they tell you they are about God’s business but in reality they have hidden agendas. They think that they always have to have everything their way and if it is not, then they hold out on the rest of the church until they get their way.

3. Cell groups or cliques

These cell groups or cliques are evident. They are an establishment in the church and are on every committee or church board. You are around them but no matter how hard you try to penetrate this culture you constantly feel left out.

4. Rigid rules

The culture of rigid rules can be found in things such as ‘the constitution, laws and by laws.’ Apparently there is no room for grace because ‘one strike, and you are out.’ It is important to have rules but when rules are deeply rooted in a culture of tradition and nothing can change because ‘that’s the way we have always done it,’ then death from that type of culture is imminent.

5. Being stingy or poverty mentality

This type of culture project a poverty mentality. They are stingy on spending the little they have. Everything they do as it relates to finances is contrary to faith and that kind of church seem to have an issue with believers in Christian-dom who are wealthy.

Wherever you go in this world today you will not find a perfect church family. Some practice cultures that can be deemed as dangerous and unhealthy while it is equally true there are good cultures in which the church would thrive.
