Her beautiful smile, her poise, her gentle spirit, a Teacher, an aspiring Poet, ‘The Watchman’ as she is known in the kingdom of God and to her church family, a positive role model to her piers and now, chosen to be the Miss BVI 2012. Her name is Sharie de Castro. She was crowned after competing against four other contestants at the Multipurpose Sports Complex on Sunday August 5th 2012. Yea Sharie, you go girl!
“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.” (1 Peter 2: 9-10)
Why did I chose to feature this article? That’s because the good done and the achievement of our youths, the positive impact they are making in our community can easily become obscured and even lost through all of the negative stuff that are happening around the world and in our society today. – we must do all that we can to preserve our heritage and to showcase their achievements to the world so that others who are pondering their own dream, can move beyond the limitations and the stigmatization that some in society have wrongfully placed upon them.
As part of her winning performance, Miss BVI 2012 was awarded a car, a scholarship that will enable her to further pursue her studies, a trip with the BVI Tourist Board, a trip to the Miss Universe Pageant and a $5000 wardrobe. For talent, Sharie showcased her poetic skills along with a rendition of “Over The Rainbow” on Violin. Her poetic feature also engaged her career as a teacher. The question she asked openly at the end of her performance was this: “What do I make? I make a difference; do you?” (Sharie de Castro)
