How Deep Is Your Love For Me, Baby?

The bible is full of verses that makes us stop and think about love and the depth of it.  Every once in a while our love will be tested. It could be love for God, love for self, love for our spouse, for our family, our neighbors, friends and even our enemies.

God’s Love for Us

“For God so love the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” ~ John 3:16

“But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” ~ Romans 5:8

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” ~ 1 John 3:1

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” ~ Romans 8:37-39

“The hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread.” ~ Mother Teresa

Our Love for God

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” ~ Mark 12:31

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.” ~ 1 John 4:7

“Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.” ~ Romans 13:8

“Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.” Romans 13:10

“Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart,” ~ 1 Peter 1:22

Love in Marriages and Weddings

“Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death, jealousy is fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, the very flame of the LORD. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man offered for love all the wealth of his house, he would be utterly despised.” ~ Song of Solomon 8:6-7

“Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.” ~ Hebrews 13:4

Husband’s Love for His Wife

“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,” ~ Ephesians 5:25

“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.” ~ Ephesians 5:25-28

“Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.” ~ Colossians 3:19

“Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.” ~ 1 Peter 3:7

“If you have only one smile in you, give it to the people you love.” ~ Maya Angelou

A Wife’s Love for Her Husband

“Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.” ~ Ephesians 5:22-24

“The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. …” Proverbs 31:11-31

“And so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.” ~ Titus 2:4-5

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins.” ~ 1 Peter 4:8

“Love is the only thing that will save us, independent of any mistakes we may make. Love is always stronger.” ~ Paulo Coelho

Love for Our Enemies

“But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.” ~ Luke 6:35

Love – The Final Test

“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.” ~ 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

  1. Hi Yvonne,

Thanks for reminding us the real meaning of love.I think world can be a better place If everyone would understand this. Thanks for sharing 🙂

    • Hi Priyanka

So nice to see you. I definitely agree that the world could be a place of harmony and peace if everyone understood what love means, and the depth it can reach. What a beautiful place it would be. Blessings and thanks for stopping by.

  2. HI Yvonne,

The scriptures, as I have read so far, only depicts love. I wonder where this hatred has evolved from?
I have felt on several occasions, that my love is tested. On several occasions, I have felt that, despite, me reflecting the true emotion of love, people misconstrue as faked one and as a reason I have been taken for granted. Now, it is difficult and highly challenging for me to love my enemies.

    • Hi Ajay

I ask myself that question at times as to where all the hatred in the world comes from but never seem to be able to come up with the right answer. Still we must agree that love will continue to be the only perfect antidote for hate.

It is unfortunate with your experience but not right that persons take your love for granted. Love is a sacrifice. My encouragement to you is to keep on loving in spite of.

I find it very difficult myself to love my enemies also but it is the right thing to do. Our blessing and reward are far greater when we do.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts with us. Have a blessed week ahead.

  3. Hi Yvonne,

Those were lovely words indeed 🙂

These scriptures say so much about love, which has a much deeper meaning that meets the eye. I know we all tend to think about the one kind of love that exists between couples, or partners, and that’s what we tend to celebrate on Valentine’s. I guess we forget the deeper meaning there is to love, isn’t it? I am glad you mentioned it all here – worth bookmarking this one.

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice weekend 🙂

    • Yes I agree with you Harleena that we tend to focus most on the love between couples and partners on Valentine’s Day but that said, it serves as a great reminder that love is much deeper and far reaching than we give credit for.

True love is a very humbling experience, don’t you think? Especially when we realise that we have to extend it even to our enemies. Amazing that love conquers all!

      Have a fantastic week. 🙂

  4. Hi Yvonne

A great post and a reminder of God’s agape love towards us.

These scriptures that you revealed to us reminds one of what Love truly is and not just what the world thinks it is. Thank you for giving us a love charter that will help us live the love life.

    • Hi Ikechi,

Glad that you found the post very helpful.

The tendency I believe is that people often stray away from what love really look, sound and feel like. As in the case of Valentine’s Day, I shared with my daughter based on a question she asked me that the days leading up to amd the actual day itself has nothing to do with the Agape love, that it is commercialisation and a way of businesses making money. By all accounts, that is the world’s definition of love.

My prayer however is that many souls out there will have an encounter with the true love of God – nothing else in the world can compare to it. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by and continue to have a great weekend.

  5. Hi Yvonne,
Those are powerful words from God. I wish every young married couple would try to live by those words so that their marriage will become stronger and last a lifetime.
