Who am I? What makes you and I so special that we stand out or, what makes another person become drawn to or attracted to us? Perhaps, single and dating? Then, why am I with that guy or why am I with that girl? Is it really true love or is it just infatuation that only a matter of time the incompatibilities become apparent, the flames dwindle and die, and we just fall out of love? What attracted us to each other in the first instance? Married, perhaps? What unique qualities do we find in each other that even at times when we get on each others’ last nerve, we can still say, my “boo” or my “babe” is the best thing that ever happened to me and I won’t give him/her up for nothing? What are we really looking for in our relationships? Have you ever stopped to think and ask yourself any of these questions?
I base my musings today on this one fundamental premise and that is, “one of the greatest setbacks that currently exists in Christiandom and on a much broader scale, in the world, is that we do not know who we are and so we often miss out on the peace, joy, happiness, and the satisfaction of the abundant life that was promised to us. In addition, it is nearly impossible to find someone at the level of your choosing (business partner, platonic relation, intimate partner/husband/wife) who is capable of understanding and respecting your deepest vulnerabilities when you aren’t clear about them yourself, either.
I now realize how difficult it would be for me to “chit chat about these stuff” with you without me speaking at times in the first person. And here is where I have allowed myself to become vulnerable as I peel back the mask even more or if you allow, remove it completely. My experience in the arena of first being a single non-Christian, to being married for nineteen years, to now being a divorced single Christian woman of God, I believe qualifies me to speak on this subject matter. It’s like coming out of the closet. I struggled during the first year of this Blog as to whether or not I really wanted to chit-chat and share from my personal experience in this area. But too late now Yvonne……putting your hand to the plough means no looking back!
Laying The Foundation….
Who am I? Who are you?
In my previous article “Let’s Chit Chat About Those Stuff” mention was already made of mankind being a tri-partied being (body, soul, spirit) By the recalls of Gen.2:7, God formed man’s body from the dust of the ground. This becomes our earthly being but not really who we are. The body was lifeless, so God breathed His breath (spirit) into man’s nostril which then animated the body and brought it to life. That’s our heavenly being. The soul of man which is really the revelation of God emerges/spring from the spirit.
In laying the foundation even further, I refer to the Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words which gives the Greek translation of the word soul as ‘psuche‘ which denotes the ‘breath of life.’ The soul used in various forms in the New Testament may be analyzed as follows: (a) the natural life of the body eg.(Mat.2:20, Luke 12:22); (b) the immaterial part of man eg. (Mat. 10:28, Acts 2:27); (c) the seat of our personality eg. (Luke 9:25, Heb. 6:19, Heb.10:39); (d) the seat of the sentiment of element in man, that which he perceives, feels and desires eg. (Mat.11:29, Luke 1:46, Luke 2:35); (e) the seat of will and purpose eg.(Mat.22:37, Acts 4:32, Eph.6:6, Heb.12:3); (f) the seat of appetite eg. (Rev.18:14)
Soul then as I have come to know it, is the very innermost part of a person’s being and it is what connects or knits the body to the spirit of man. It is the seat of one’s intelligence, conscience, passion and reason and it houses the mind, will and emotions of an individual. The soul and the spirit in more ways than one are alike in their nature and their activities. Being the life breath, it is the very first thing that leaves man’s body upon death. In general analysis however, the spirit is the higher life form, while the soul is the lower element. The SPIRIT (pneuma) is the principle thing bestowed on man by God, while the SOUL (psuche) is the resulting life constituted in the individual. The BODY (soma) being the material visible organism (house, tabernacle, temple) is animated by both the soul and the spirit.
We are not who we see with our natural eyes (body). We are heavenly beings (soul and spirit) dwelling here on earth in our earthly being (body).
Let’s Talk About This Next Hot Topic
One song writer says, ‘let’s talk about sex baby, let’s talk about it!’ Oh, Really!!! Lol!!! How did we get there already, baby? We ain’t even talk about intimacy (in-to-me-see), who I am, and love, we talking about sex? I say, let’s talk about the in-to-me-see, let’s talk about who I am and who you are, let’s talk about LOVE! Further, how can we talk about love, when we have not even talked about the one who is love and the one who gives love? Follow me, cause I’m going somewhere with this….
God is the only source and giver of love! One must know God, to know true, authentic, no strings attached love! Not saying that your ‘boo’ or your ‘babe’ or your ‘darling’ don’t love you but my question to you is, what kind of love?
