The Most Important Rule In Life [It’s Not What You Thought]
In life there are many rules that we must follow. Some are outlined in varying forms and are made crystal clear, while others even if not clearly stated are implied. We understand that we are not to do X,Y and Z because it is the rule and there are consequences and punishment for rules that are broken.
We have rules at home [let’s hope so]. We have rules at work that are meant to guide us in the way things get done or the way in which we are to conduct ourselves and what the expectations are from the employer and employee’s perspective.
Some rules and guidelines are posted up on the wall in the offices while others are written in handbooks often referred to as ‘Employee Code of Conduct.’
We go to the Library and there is one very important rule that one must follow and that is in relation to the level of noise while there.
We have heard also heard much about the golden rule in life which says – “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
None of the foregoing however can compare or compete with the most important rule in life that I am about to share with you.
What’s the Most Important Rule In Life?
In the gospel according to Mark 12, it is stated that a Lawyer by profession [being an expert in the Mosaic Law] having heard them arguing with one another and noted that Jesus had already answered them about what was being discussed, asked Jesus to identify which rule [commandment] is the first and most important of all in life.
Without hesitation, Jesus proceeded to give him the answer to his enquiry, not as to which rule was first in order [since all commands are great] but the one that we must all give due weight and dignity to.
The first and most important rule is this:
“And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul [life], and with all your mind [thought, understanding], and with all your strength.” [Mark 12:30 AMP]
The key phrase is “you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart” meaning we are to love God with everything that we have and all that we are.
How can we love God first and foremost and in the way that Jesus has detailed for us?
God first loved us by giving up His only Son to die in our place on Calvary’s Cross. It is the main evidence of His unconditional love for us.
He perceive to give us the ability to love Him first before we direct our love to anyone or anything else. His love is reciprocal and we love Him because He first loved us. [1 John 4:19]
His love is to be understood as the Agape love and is the principle thing that emanates from the soul that has been renewed by the grace of the Almighty God.
We are capable of loving God first when we remove anything that will rival Him or compete with Him for the throne in our souls. He is our God. Our affection and our desire must be to Him first and everything else after. We must do all we can to delight ourselves in Him. Our obedience to God is evidence of our love towards Him.
Your turn to let’s talk it over
Was this post helpful to you? What is preventing you from loving God first? Can you think of what that one thing might be that is hindering you from loving God first and foremost?
Take action today to make the necessary changes in your life in order to follow the most important rule in life.
Hi Yvonne
I can’t think of any reason why I would not love God. He is awesome, mighty and loves me unconditionally.
So I love him too and nothing can separate me from his love.
Thanks for sharing. Take care
Amen! Have a great week Ikechi. Cheers! 🙂
Hi Yvonne,
God certainly loves us and wants to restore us. We can make doing His will complicated when in fact it’s simple.
But first we have to know Him because He made it clear that if we don’t know Him we don’t know love.
Because that’s what He is.
The bible also says if we don’t have love we don’t nothing.
The ultimate proof is in our desire to help others.
When you have the love of God in you, you think of others more than yourself.
Great post!
Hi Vernon
Great contribution! Definitely we have to get to know Him first because God Himself is love. When we know love through God then we are better positioned to love ourselves and then to love others. True love will also guide us and help us to think of others more and same way to help them with whatever their needs are.
God bless you and enjoy the rest of the week.
Hi, Yvonne
His love for you , me, and others by crucified on the cross is not just the highest form of love that human can experience, is also the distinguish character of God among gods in other religions. None of their gods died for them and resurrected from dead (conquer dead) for them.
Sometimes, we, as believers, forget how distinguish Jesus is and He is the only true real God in the Universe!
We are so blessed to call Him God who provides peace and confident as we walk through our paths called “LIFE”.
Nice post, Yvonne!

Hi Stella,
Truly awesome as you dissect the word even further for us. I could not agree with you more with what you have said.
What stood out for me was the clear line of demarcation that you have made that God’s love is the highest form of love that human can experience and it is the distinguishing factor among other gods in religions. What an awesome God He is! 🙂 We should never take His love for granted.
Great contribution Stella. So appreciated. Have a great day/week. Take care.
Hi Yvonne
Very important rule you mentioned and that is the foundation stone of spending a happy and successful life.
The one who created us and this whole world is the one who take care of us and save us from all ills. This He does for those who seeks His help and we simply have to build a stronger relation with Him with our prayers and supplications.
Many thanks for sharing this very motivational post to be closer to God and be safe from all evils.
Have a super wonderful week ahead.
Hi Yvonne,
Wonderful indeed 🙂
You are right, the most important things in life are so simple and easy to follow, though we humans tend to think the other way round and complicate this beautiful life given to us by the Almighty.
True indeed, if we learn to love God, we learn to love ourselves and others too. However, it maybe tough for some people to go beyond loving themselves, leave alone think of Him as our savior. Hope this post throws more light onto them.
Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂
Hi Harleena,
It’s always a pleasure to see you. Trust you had a great weekend and is geared up for all the wonderful things that are in store for you this week.
I love the way you have outlined the order in which true love flows. 🙂 First and foremost is to love God, then ourselves and that same measure of love that we have for God and ourselves will be demonstrated to others. It also brings to mind the word that we are to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. This somehow confirms and ties into what you mentioned that it may be tough for some people to go beyond loving themselves let alone our Savior and others.
Let’s hope that the light really shine on them and bring them in line with this. Have a great day/week. Take care. 🙂
