We hear of so many stories where people reach the point of rock bottom in their life. You may be one of those persons who have had such an experience and understand too well what it’s all about. But for you who have never been there, I want you to know it’s a place in your life where you feel hopeless and you are at the point of giving up on life.
You are stripped of everything, at times even your dignity. God’s presence seems far from you and nothing; I mean nothing makes sense anymore. You begin to look for a way to escape your pain in all of the wrong places and you even turn to things and people who instead of pointing you to the road of recovery and redemption, they lead you in all of the wrong things.
Time goes by and the noise of fear grows so intense and begins to consume the silence of spiritual death. Sadly, that is the point where some end up taking their own life.
Not all stories where one is plunged into rock bottom end in death by suicide. There are many heart-warming stories of victory and triumph over defeat and where God is known to step in and transform lives from fear at rock bottom to mountaintop faith.
Michael Phelps’ Road to Redemption and Faith
Michael Phelps’ total tally in Olympic gold medals reached 23 at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and by all accounts, this may well be the final time before he retires from competing in the sport that not only placed him in the spotlight but caused so many to come to know and love him.
His extraordinary gift of swimming caused him to rise to stardom over the years. But somehow his life would take a turn that sent him into a downward spiral. By his own confession he was arrested and charged with DUI. And recently he also revealed his struggles with substance abuse and how he almost committed suicide.
There were days following his arrest when he isolated himself in his home, he didn’t eat, hardly slept while all the while he was considering killing himself.
In his own words he revealed, “I was a train wreck. I was like a time bomb, waiting to go off. I had no self-esteem, no self-worth. There were times where I didn’t want to be here. It was not good. I felt lost.” ~ Michael Phelps
He claimed that at the time he was thinking to himself, “This is the end of my life. How many times will I mess up? Maybe the world would be better without me.”
Life however was not meant to end for Phelps, at least not yet, not right now. God proved that He had His hands upon the once focused and disciplined swimming machine and would intervene in the most extraordinary and unprecedented way worthy of all the praise, glory and honor to His name.
The evidence of the amazing grace of God, His unquestionable and undeniable power to raise human-kind from rock bottom to mountaintop faith came when a long-time friend of Phelps, a Christian and NFL star by the name of Ray Lewis spoke words of life, hope and encouraged him to get into rehab. Phelps was also blessed by his friend with the book “The Purpose Driven Life, What On Earth Am I Here For? by Rick Warren
In an interview with ESPN Magazine Phelps shared how reading the Christian book not only led to believe there is a power greater than himself (power of Christ) but he understood there to be a purpose for him on this planet.
Additionally, through his new found faith in Christ, Phelps was persuaded through the reading of the book to make amends and reconcile the disunity between him and his estranged father who had divorced his mom when he was just at the time 9 years old.
His life has been changed. He is back on the mountaintop of championship, Olympic gold and stardom, only this time through his faith in Jesus Christ.
Shortly after leaving rehab in November 2014 he began to train for the Rio Olympics. The evidence of God’s blessings did not end there. He reconciled with his long-time girlfriend, Nicole Johnson who he asked to be his wife. On May 5th 2015 the engaged couple was blessed with the birth of their first son, Boomer Robert and is said to be formerly wed in holy matrimony at the end of 2016.
A Divine Encounter And A New Life Through Christ

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” ~ 1 John 1:9 (ESV)

Your action today is to confess your sins so you can receive His grace of forgiveness.
“Therefore, if any man is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” ~ 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)
