“The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. the statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous.” ~ Psalm 19:7-9 NIV
As we embark upon the beginning of the 7th month, which essentially is the start of the second half of 2018, I am inclined to reflect not only on the goodness of the Lord but on His uncanny and exceptional perfection. So perfect are the ways of the Lord that the Psalmist without hesitation, described them as being refreshing to the soul and a joy to the heart of man.
The number seven is symbolic of spiritual perfection and completeness, it is referred to as God’s number, He having rested on the seventh day following the creation of mankind and after looking at the ones He had created in His image and after His likeness, the Lord said His work was ‘very good.’ It was very good in His eyes because He is incapable of creating anything less than Himself. Everything that He created is perfect in His eyes.
His decrees are firm and all of them are without fault. His commands gives the array of a radiant light to the eyes of the beholder. The revelation of God and who He is, is whole, and it pulls our lives together even if on the one hand, our lives seems to be falling apart.
“The revelation of God is whole and pulls our lives together.”
The first half of 2018 is gone and no matter what we have been through, the mistakes we have made, the poor choices and decisions that we have made, those things cannot be undone. Some have suffered greatly. The world remains marred and is in a far worse broken state than we have ever seen it before but through the eyes of our loving Creator, we are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
The Bible says in Hebrews 4:15 NIV, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weakness, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet he did not sin.”
While we cannot undo the past, we must look to the only true living and perfect God, to make good on His promises and to give us the desired outcome for the rest of the year and beyond. We must never allow the revelation of who God is to escape our heart and mind and likewise we must never miss the opportunity to declare that the Lord is upright.
While we too may strive for perfection ourselves, let us not forget that it is only when we abide in God and He in us that we can do anything that is right and pleasing in His eyes.
“The way of the righteous is smooth; O Upright One, make the path of the righteous level.” ~ Isaiah 26:7 NASB
