“That’s My Momma and She Rocks”

Charm can fool you, and beauty can trick you, but a woman who respects the Lord should be praised. Give her the reward she has earned; she should be praised in public for what she has done.
(Proverbs 31:30-31)
Born and raised  in Hughes Arkansas, two pretty little twin girls full of life, gave their parents joy, and little did they know they would grow up and start their own family while taking care of their parents in their old age. Velma and Thelma were twin sisters and they were like two peas in a pod. There are six siblings all together. My mom is Velma L. Van Winkle and she is sweet and feisty with a big heart and I love her to life.  She graduated from Mildred Jackson High School, receiving her high school diploma. Although my mom was raised in Arkansas, when she moved to Chicago she adjusted pretty well, that’s when she formally met my father who was a country boy from the same neck of the woods she grew up in. While in Chicago they got to know one another very well and the two became one. She became Velma L. Childs. They started a family and my two sisters and I were born.

My mom Velma is a woman of faith, a wife, a mother, grandmother, a sister, aunt, and friend. She is a “personal chauffer” to her kids and grandkids and others sometimes even when she doesn’t feel like doing it…she still does it with a smile. My mom is what you call a “cool mom and grandma” especially in the fashion world. She is a classy dresser, and her daughters got it from their momma. Velma Childs is an example of a wise woman who is full of grace and dignity.  Proverbs 14:1 (NCV) says “A wise woman strengthens her family, but a foolish woman destroys hers by what she does.” My mother is an active member of her church and has been attending it for over 30 years.

Growing up in a home with just girls and my dad, my mom made sure we looked like little princesses. I can remember her buying me big pretty puffy dresses for Easter that was very unique and no one else had them. My mom gave us the benefit of the doubt sometimes when we got in trouble, which was the opposite of what my dad would do. My mom can fuss, but she would end the argument like nothing ever happened and give you a hug. She is a compassionate and a confident woman, she is queen.

Velma Childs can be quiet at times, but then on the other hand she can speak her mind. Proverbs 31:10-11 (MSG) says “A good woman is hard to find, and worth far more than diamonds. Her husband trusts her without reserve, and never has reason to regret it.” My mom worked, cooked and cleaned and made sure the castle was spotless and took care of her family. Her and my dad raised 3 beautiful, classy, confident young women. When my mother retired she kept herself busy and still does to this day. She is active at the community center, and takes classes. She also has a hobby of going to garage sales when it’s nice out to ease her mind.

In 2004 her twin sister Thelma became ill and my mom went back to Arkansas where her sister lived and stayed for weeks to help take care of her sister .She loved her sister with all her heart and you knew it. I can’t explain it, you just had to be there in those moments. Mrs. Velma L. Childs is special to God, her husband, children, grandchildren, relatives, friends, neighbours and the list goes on and on. She is the type of lady who will be there for you at the drop of a hat, and if she can’t she will call you and give you words of encouragement.
She is loved without a shadow doubt and THAT’S MY MOMMA AND SHE ROCKS!!!
