The Most Intimate Thing You Can Do With Your Spouse (REMR-9)

Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands for us. (Psalm 90:17)

God in His infinite wisdom created us to have intimacy with Him first and foremost. He made male and female. He ordained and officiated at the very first marriage between Adam and Eve, thus giving them the freedom within the confines of their marriage to have and enjoy sexual intercourse and not to ever be ashamed of it. But is that the most beautiful thing that couples can enjoy in their life? Is it the most euphoric and intimate act that we can do as married couples? It may surprise you that the answer to those questions is no. Instead, it is prayer.

Prayer is the most intimate thing that any couple whether dating, engaged, or married can do! Taking the time to pray with your partner for at least five minutes a day can do wonders for the both of you. Prayer has the power to transform your relationship. Praying together keeps you loving God and following His ways together. Just those few minutes a day together in prayer can pep up your love life, while it increase intimacy, trust and respect between the man and woman.

Speaking of trust, KalleyC of Blogging While Nursing left a comment on my last post that says in part, “Trust is indeed the glue that really keeps relationships together.” I would say too, much like trust, prayer makes an even stronger bond between couples. Studies tell us that the fear of couples ending up in divorce drops to zero percent, and loving feelings peak to its highest when you take time each day to pray together to your Creator!

The more you pray and confess God’s word together, the more you empower the angels to get through to you and get manifestation to your prayers. You empower the angels to get your blessings to you by (a) faith in God’s word and (b) the confession of God’s word. Confession of God’s word stirs and activates your faith, and faith activates the word of God.

More tips for praying with your partner:

1) Prayer cements your relationship into a foundation not easily broken.

Simply stated, more prayer, more power! God invites you to come into His presence each day so that He can love, encourage, and teach you. It is also His way of helping you to build a marital foundation that is fireproof, unshakable and lasting until the time when physical death alone separates you. Prayer brings God into the centre of your lives, to give you the focus you need and more power from on high to withstand evil and the storms of life.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. (Jeremiah 29:11)

2) Schedule your time to pray together
You both run very tight schedules and so it is important to set aside a mutually conducive time for you to dialogue together to the Lord. Is that time early morning or in the evening when the kids have all been tucked into bed and the house is quiet? For some, it is best early in the morning, for others it is before you go to bed. Whatever time is most conducive, make it work for you. If you are apart, then keep the schedule and pray over the telephone.

3) Pray to know God’s perfect will for your life as a couple
You were born for a purpose, born for such a time as this to fulfill the mandate that God intended for you as a couple. His idea is for the man to have the vision of God’s assignment for his life and you the woman to be right there beside him as his help meet. Knowing God’s will mean seeking the face of God together so that He may reveal His plans and thoughts for you.

4) Maintain an attitude of gratitude
Be grateful always to God for what He has already done, is doing and about to do in your life. An attitude of gratitude releases more of God’s blessings into your life. Thank Him for them. Be open and honest before Him, He already knows everything about you anyway!

5) Remove blockages from your life by confessing your sins and asking for forgiveness
No one is perfect and so it is important to pray and ask God to reveal to you any problem areas in your life and to request forgiveness from Him. His invitation is simple. He says, “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” (Isaiah 1:18) Do not carry the burdens anymore, give them all to Him

6) Make your request known to God in simple ways
First, get into the habit of making a list of your concerns and requests together before going before the Lord. Keep the prayer simple and establish who will pray for each one of those prayer request. Pray out loud with your spouse. It may be uncomfortable at first, especially if you have not been doing it together before, but the more you do it, the more natural it will eventually become. God is not impressed with long winded prayers so you may want to keep it short and to the point, using your everyday language.

7) Pray for your marriage on a regular basis
Prayer is intimacy and should not be used as a time to magnify the faults and shortcomings of your spouse. Be sensitive to each other’s feelings. It is never about who is right or wrong in a given situation, but about what’s wrong – there is a difference. Be sure to use kind, encouraging and uplifting words as you ask the Lord to show you ways that you can be more supportive to your spouse. Pray and ask God to fill you more with His love, so that you can love your spouse more and more each day.

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that ask receive; and he that seek shall find; and to him that knock, it shall be opened. (Matthew 7:7-8)

8) Pray for one another
Pray for one another and also pray for family members and others, especially couples. You want to experience the best for your marriage and to see the manifestation of God’s promises, not just in your life but in the lives of others. Remember to pray for yourself . As individuals, you need help for yourself also.

9) Expect an answer to your prayers
According to the word of God, you must expect an answer to your prayers. He says ask, it shall be given to you with good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over. So pray believing that God hears your prayer and will answer – maybe not within your time frame but believe that He will answer in a way that He knows is best for your life. Be patient while you wait and know that God is never late, He is an on time God.

  2. Everything about this post is very true. Aside from trust, prayer is very important. I love it when we sit down together and say a simple prayer together. For us it's at the end of our day, when we're not rushing, and we can enjoy being with each other and welcome the calm of the day (at the end of the day) with prayer.

One of our favorite times is honestly going to church and singing the hymns together. We know that regardless of what can happen, our marriage is stronger day by day.
