Sudan ‘to free’ Christian Sudanese Woman, Meriam Ibrahim

Speaking of remaining defiant, and to understand what it really means to hold on to your faith, Christianity and what you believe in, the BBC reported Saturday that Sudanese officials announced that Meriam Ibrahim, 27, who gave birth to a baby girl, Maya, earlier this week, is to be freed.

According to sources, Abdullah Alzareg, who is an under-secretary at the Foreign Ministry, said Sudan guaranteed religious freedom and has vowed to protect the young mother.

Meriam’s 100 lashes and death sentence was expected to be carried out two years after birth of her baby for marrying a Christian US citizen, Daniel Wani and for practicing Christianity.

Earlier on, an Islamic Sharia Judge had given her the opportunity to renounce Christ and become a Muslim, but she remained defiant in her faith, rejected to the offer, choosing to face death by hanging instead.

She said in an earlier report, “If they want to execute me then they should go ahead and do it because I’m not going to change my faith.”

“I refuse to change. I am not giving up Christianity just so that I can live. I know I could stay alive by becoming a Muslim and I would be able to look after our family, but I need to be true to myself.,” she added.

Sudan had been facing much international condemnation and pressure from UK and other world leaders over the death sentence.
